Mozy Option – Disable Icon Overlays to Speed Up Your Computer

Have you installed Mozy and your computer seems to slow to a crawl when Mozy starts to do a backup? Here is a tip that has worked for some people to bring their computer back to life and let Mozy continue backing up your data.

Open the Mozy configuration menu and select the Options tab.
Mozy Options Tab

Look for the “Disable icon overlays in Windows Explorer”.
Mozy Disable Explorer Icons

If this option is on, then deselect it and save your new configuration.
Mozy Disable Explorer Icons Deselected

This new configuration can help to speed up your computer, but you will no longer be able to see in the file explorer if Mozy has backed up a file. A small price to pay to have your files backed up and have a more responsive computer.

Mozy Helps Recover Stolen Laptop

I read an article the other day that could give you another fantastic reason to use Mozy to backup your laptop. The article was posted at BusinessWeek. The story goes that Damian Zikakis had his laptop stolen and promptly had it replaced. At some point he checked his Mozy account and discovered that files were being backed up that were not his. The thief had started to use the laptop and his photos and files were starting to be backed up. Eventually a document was backed up that contained the name and address of the where the thief lived. This information was then given to the police who were able to recover the stolen laptop. Mozy went from being able to jsut backup files to being able to recover a stolen laptop.

What more reasons do you need to try MozyHome Free or MozyHome Unlimited? Not saying that Mozy will help recover your laptop if it is stolen, but you never know, it might just be what you need to recover your hardware as well as restore your files.

Mozy Commercials

Mozy has released some commercials. They are pretty good actually, made me laugh. To bad losing all your data is not funny like they are in the commercials.

Mozy Online Backup Cost

Money photo. Found at: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/1035681What would it cost to replace your data? The cost of your data all depends on what it is. If it is family photos of your daughters third birthday could you just re shoot them? Not likely. If you lose that essay you had been working on for the last two weeks the cost might be your time of having to redo it. If it is your business data you would be looking at recreating that data. Either paying one of your employees to reenter the data or looking at sending the hard drive away to try and have some data recovered. You might have to not accept new work while you redo the data or not take on as much new work.

Here is a simple math lesson looking at the cost of MozyHome Unlimited.

  • Monthly subscription: $4.95 if paid monthly. That is only $59.40/year. Pretty cheap.
  • Yearly subscription: $54.45 paid yearly. That includes one month free. If you use the latest promotional code you can take 10% off of that price. That works out to a yearly cost of $49.00/year or $4.08/month.
  • Two Year subscription: $103.95 paid every two years. That includes three months free. If you use the latest promotional code you can take 10% off of that price. That works out to a two year subscription price of $93.55. A yearly cost of $46.78/year or $3.90/month.

That is not a great deal of money to make sure your files are backed up. For home users there is nothing better than knowing your precious files are safe and secure. MozyHome unlimited will make sure those memories are safe. For students, check out MozyHome free. 2gb free is enough to make sure that latest term paper is safe in case the laptop dies or is stolen. For business users, MozyPro, can get your business back up and running quickly in case your file server dies or your main computer meets it’s end. For small businesses MozyPro is you backup IT department.

In these turbulent economic times people are concerned about spending money, fair enough, but the cost of not backing up your data will cost you a lot more than just money. It can cost you memories that can never be recovered, data that will cost you time to recreate and in some businesses it could mean closing down. Your data has become even more valuable now, make sure it is safe with Mozy online backup.

MozyPro for Mac

You might have heard already that MozyPro for the Mac has been released to the public. It is still in beta, but from all accounts it is stable and worth looking into. I know several offices that are Mac online and they are always looking to have a backup solution, now they can. The best part is the MozyPro for Mac is as simple and easy to use as the regular MozyPro. Whether you have an office with both Windows PC’s and Macs or just Macs, not you can have the protection and peace of mind knowing that all of the files you work so hard on can be backed up no matter what platform you use. Now if only they had a Linux version.

Mozy Success Stories

I started talking about how great Mozy is after I started using it over a year ago to backup my own personal and work data. MozyPro helped my business survive a hard drive crash and I use MozyHome Unlimited to backup all of our families photos and videos. Mozy could easily hire me to be their evangelist, since I am pretty much doing it anyways. There are others out there that are just as happy with Mozy as I have been and I thought I would point out a few in case you have not come across their blog posts.

Ian Nelson has a great post about how Mozy. According to the post he currently backs up roughly 60GB of data. It sounds like he mostly uses Mozy to backup family photos.

J.Dare has a post talking about how unlimited really does mean unlimited with Mozy. According to the blog post it sounds like he is backing up somewhere close to 2 TB using MozyHome Unlimited for Mac. He talks a little about how long it took with his ISP. It all depends on how fast your upload connection is.

Colin Meeks talks about his search for an online backup service and why he finally settled on Mozy. He also talks a little about the restore options you have. If you have a lot of data you probably will have to order a restore DVD’s, but as he says:

This is not going to be cheap however. Mozy charge $0.50 per gigabyte, $30 for processing and will charge your credit card for FedEx shipping, so in my case I will be looking at something in excess of $120 + shipping. The way I look at it though, if I need to make use of this service, something awful has happened, and spending $120+ is going to be the least of my worries.

If you want a more official source of news and reviews, Ars Technica did a review of several online backup services back in July 2007, and Mozy was their “top general pick”.

MozyPro Price Drop

I have been using MozyPro to backup my small business data for almost a year now. It has helped me survive a hard drive crash, accidentally deleting important files and has saved me many hours of work that could have all been lost if MozyPro had not been there running. I liked MozyPro so much for my own data backup that I became a reseller and started installing MozyPro to local businesses to backup their data. It is a great service that every small business should use to backup their data. Think about how much work you would lose if you lost the files from your latest project or worse all of your Quicken or Simply Accounting data! Think of the hours and hours of work it would take to restore it all. MozyPro can save your business from all that headache.

Mozy recently reduced the price of storage for the MozyPro server product from $1.75/GB to $.50/GB. Now you can have near continuous data backup for only $.50/GB. No more worrying if the backup script ran overnight, or forgetting to run your own backup everyday. MozyPro can take care of it all for you after an easy setup.
